Eulerian Solids for Soft Tissue and More!

Simulating highly constrained mechanical and biomechanical systems has long been an area of interest for graphics researchers and practitioners alike. In fact, the tissue-simulation tool developed by Weta Digital won a Technical Award at the 2012 Academy Awards for its ability to solve these types of problems. Unfortunately, these standard techniques still struggle when forced to deal with highly deformable objects undergoing breaking contact, sliding contact, and other constraints.

The Eulerian-solids methodology excels at handling these sorts of problems, and its capabilities have been demonstrated in several papers presented at the annual SIGGRAPH conference. This course provides an in-depth look at the formulation and implementation of Eulerian solids at a level suitable for researchers and developers of physical-simulation software.

The course reviews the general concept of Eulerian solids and shows how it can be adapted to simulate 1-,2- and 3-dimensional elastoplastic objects. It also shows how the method can be coupled with existing techniques to provide improved constraint handling as well as additional simulation details. Finally, it provides insight into implementation of a variety of Eulerian simulators and shows a plethora of examples with a heavy emphasis on biomechanics. The goal is for attendees to acquire a full working knowledge of the Eulerian solids methodology.
