HaptoMIRAGE: Mid-Air Autostereoscopic Display for Seamless Interaction With a Mixed-Reality Environment

HaptoMIRAGE is a simultaneous multi-user autostereoscopic display for seamless interaction with mixed-reality environments. The system can project 3D content in mid-air and enable as many as three participants to observe the same content with a 180-degree wide-angle view. It can be used in several scenarios, such as superimposition of 3D content onto real objects; drawing line art in mid-air, and multi-user collaborative drawing in the real world. Users can interact with the 3D content, such as rotating it and viewing it from different angles, so they can easily create and feel the mixed-reality world via tangible objects with multi-modal sensations.

SIGGRAPH 2014 attendees can observe and interact with mid-air 3D content superimposed onto real objects without wearing any special glasses. They can also create colorful line drawings on real objects using a pen-shaped device, as they would naturally do with their hands in the real world. These artworks can be created in collaboration with multiple users, and they do not fade over time, so they can be edited anytime.

The project's goal is to implement a mixed-reality platform with natural 3D interaction and integrated haptic sensation for creative design, storytelling, entertainment, and remote collaboration by seamlessly mixing the real and virtual worlds.
