Augmented/Virtual Reality Contest

Submission Deadline

Wednesday, 25 June 2014
22:00 UTC/GMT

What are we looking for?
The purpose of the SIGGRAPH 2014 Augmented/Virtual Reality Contest is to encourage developers to create and showcase the best augmented/virtual reality experiences possible using today’s technologies. The contest is open to anyone interested in augmented/virtual reality: researchers, students, hobbyists, and professionals. Contestants can use any software and hardware they choose.

Up to three finalists will be selected to demonstrate their technology at SIGGRAPH 2014, during Real-Time Live! The winning team will then be announced from the Real-Time Live stage!

Oculus VR, Inc, creators of the ground-breaking virtual reality gaming headset, Oculus Rift, will provide Oculus DK2 (development kit 2) headsets to each of the top three finalists. The grand prize winner will receive a DK2 personally signed by Oculus leadership.

All finalists will also have the opportunity to demonstrate their system to attendees during SIGGRAPH 2014's Appy Hour, Wednesday, 13 August, 5:30-7:30 pm.

Notice to All SIGGRAPH 2014 Contributors

All contributors to SIGGRAPH Annual Conferences are now required to use ACM's rights management system to grant rights to publish accepted content rather than through the online submission system. Essentially, submission tracking, jury review, and acceptance remains the same, but now the rights management is through ACM, the parent organization of SIGGRAPH.

You will be asked to complete an ACM rights management form, which includes permission to record and distribute the audio and video of your recorded presentation through official channels of ACM/SIGGRAPH. For most content types other than Technical Papers, this will be a Permission and Release form, which allows authors to retain copyright. For Technical Papers, authors will have a choice of transferring copyright, providing an exclusive publishing license, or an Open Access license.

As a contributor to an ACM-sponsored event, the following expectations apply to you, should your content be accepted for presentation:

  • If you are using copyrighted musical compositions in your presentation, you must secure performing rights licenses.
  • You must have the authority to grant ACM the right to distribute your presentation.

Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive via email a link to the appropriate form for your contribution.  Good luck!

Submissions are due by 22:00 UTC/GMT, 25 June 2014.

Log in to the SIGGRAPH Information System, select "Begin a New Submission," and then select "create" for the Real-Time Live! submission form. You will be asked to complete or provide:

  • The submitter's name.
  • Contact information, affiliation, title of work.
  • Names of all authors.
  • List of credits.
  • Hardware required to run your project if it is selected.

  • One "representative image" suitable for use in the conference web site and promotional materials (at least 500x500 pixels, but no larger than 3 MB) See Representative Image Guidelines.

This video capture can include multiple non-continuous edits, but do not use any post-production tools or facilities to enhance the images or speed. Entries are judged by a panel of experts from traditional computer graphics, video games, and research. They are looking for the best usage of interactive and immersive technologies. Creativity, innovation (in both technology and usage), performance, and overall quality will be weighed equally. The jury will meet at the end of June to review each submission on a five-point scale for the following criteria:

1. Innovation (pushes the boundaries beyond that of typical AR/VR implementations)

2. Interactivity (how the submission is different from a linear, pre-rendered segment)

3. Creativity and originality

4. Interest and entertainment value for conference attendees

5. Production value (appropriate to context)

The jury will select three top-rated pieces for presentation at SIGGRAPH 2014, and all submitters will be notified of their submission status by early July. The jury may decide to provide awards in different categories for example., academic, indie, or open).

You will be able to update your basic submission information so that it can be included in the conference schedule and web site.

At SIGGRAPH 2014, the chosen finalists will show their work via video during Real-Time Live! The winner will be voted on and chosen by the audience.

If you wish to attend SIGGRAPH 2014, registration and travel costs are at your own expense, except for the contributor of record, who will receive recognition in the form of a 25% discount on the cost of registration for SIGGRAPH 2014.

You will receive information on when and where your work will be demonstrated at SIGGRAPH 2014.
